Status:
Roof repairs and HVAC work were completed over the summer of 2000, and during the summer of 2001. The addition of a theatrical lighting bridge and historical painting of the audience chamber were completed during the summer of 2002. Summer 2003 improvements included a new sound and communications system and stage rigging and drapery. The grant scope was completed in 2003, but additional funding is being sought for remaining needs.

Status:
After several months of value-engineering work and revisions to the drawings, construction of a new 5000 sq. ft. music facility within the African Heritage complex began in early 2003 and is scheduled for completion by mid 2004. Due to increased costs to complete this work, the Department of Cultural Affairs has identified additional funds and has increased the grant from $365,000 to $1,065,000.

The City of Hialeah is currently re-evaluating the scope of the project and working in collaboration with our Department on a master plan for the City facilities adjacent to the auditorium and for the viability of constructing a new Milander ‘Studio Theater.’

Phase one of the project, which included the construction of a dance studio and theater storage, roof and HVAC upgrades, was completed in early 2002, while the second phase, installation of stage equipment, lighting, and audio equipment and cosmetic improvements to the audience chamber was completed in early 2003.

Exterior repairs have been completed using matching funds. Additional matching funds have been identified and will be used for A/C repairs. Grant funds will be re-directed to upgrade the sound & communications systems, and theatrical lighting. Design work for the new system began in early 2003.

The Colony Theater
