Business and the Arts Report
“The Business and The Arts Report” A study conducted by The Beacon Council in partnership with the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs

In March 2008, The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade’s official economic development organization, in partnership with the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, unveiled the results of the Business and The Arts survey. The 2007 survey gathered information from the corporate community about their involvement in the arts sector. “Among the next steps of South Florida’s economic future is to understand how an integrated business and cultural arts community impacts the development and expectations of Miami-Dade County. Ours is an evolving global community that includes an emerging business and cultural arts investment center,” said Frank Nero, President & CEO of The Beacon Council. “It is important that a dialogue begins for the purposes of integrating, promoting and leveraging these two segments. To accomplish this, we must better understand the strategy of how decisions are made by businesses and cultural arts organizations, as well as the impact of those decisions upon our community.”

The survey is the first step of a Beacon Council Arts Initiative to gain insight as to how better integrate the corporate and cultural communities in order to give Miami-Dade County’s economic viability a competitive edge in the global marketplace. The goals of this initiative are to: 1) better understand how and why local corporations (small or large) support arts organizations; 2) develop a more integrated business and arts sector; 3) promote the arts and cultural assets of Miami-Dade County as a major aspect of the quality of life when attracting companies to Miami; and 4) grow this sector by strengthening cultural and arts entities.

“One of the great assets that contribute to the exceptional quality of life in Miami-Dade County is our arts and cultural community,” said Michael Spring, Director of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. “We are enthusiastic partners with The Beacon Council on the Arts Initiative. It is an ideal opportunity to collaborate on developing a strategy that capitalizes on the competitive edge that culture and the arts provide to successful economic development. It demonstrates the remarkable return on investment that culture and the arts deliver to contributing local companies.”

Culture Shock Miami Audience Research
Student preferences in terms of information sources demonstrate that the Internet is gradually replacing traditional sources of information such as TV, radio and newspapers. 55% of college students and 56% of high school students use Internet for information.; 30% of college students and 40% of high schools students rely exclusively on Internet for news and information. As some students mentioned in the focus groups, Internet provides “on demand” information which is accessible at any time. Students use a combination of search engines to obtain information, with most popular being Google, followed by Yahoo and Wikipedia. The overwhelming majority of both college (85%) and high school students (91%) report using Google as their search engine, usually in combination with other search engines.
Culture Shock Miami Audience Research (Powerpoint)
The Metropolitan Center conducted surveys of high school and college students for the Department of Cultural Affairs in order to assist the Department in improving the visibility and interest in its Culture Shock program. In addition, the surveys were followed by focus groups with college and high schools students, high school teachers and parents of high school and college students in the ages 13 to 22. The results of this extensive research are intended to guide the Cultural Affairs Department in designing strategies for reaching out to Miami’s youth and engaging them in cultural events.

Culture Shocked
Culture Shocked is a short created by Ground Up & Rising with assistance from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and its CultureShockMiami.com student ticketing program - which works in partnership with nearly 100 arts organizations, museums and more to provide students 13-22 performance information, discounted tickets for just $5, and special engagement announcements.

The 20-minute film features characters such as “Texting Tyra” and “Emo Edward” - who don’t know how to enjoy a performance or what appropriate audience behavior is. Throughout the film, the audience follows the journey of protagonist “Slick Shawn” as he opens his eyes to new things, while a conscious voice narrator introduces him to the work, spirit and diversity that create art, music, dance and theater.

Culture Shocked is a great supplemental lesson plan tool for teachers seeking to promote an awareness and appreciation of the arts, as well as illustrate an awareness of the consequences associated with a lack of exposure to the arts.

Culture Shocked and an excerpt entitled “Top 10 Rudest Things NOT to Do at a Cultural Event” can be viewed online. For a copy of the film, please contact Gerry Landreth at (305) 375-4987.
