“Start with the Arts” (SWTA) is an exciting arts-based learning approach to literacy and school readiness for children ages four to six (and which can be adapted for children as young as three). This instructional program, which emphasizes including children of all abilities, was created by
VSA arts and enables teachers and parents to create meaningful learning experiences for young children utilizing all of the arts -- visual arts, creative movement, creative drama, and music.
The Miami-Dade SWTA pilot program was launched in early 2005 and in its first year will help more than 1,300 children throughout Miami-Dade County, ages three to five, improve literacy and school readiness skills. The program is a collaborative pilot project of the Department of Cultural Affairs,
Arts for Learning/Miami,
VSA arts,
VSA arts of Florida, the
Peace Education Foundation, and 35 daycare centers throughout Miami-Dade County.
With pilot year funding provided by
The Children’s Trust and the Department of Cultural Affairs, approximately 635 daycare teachers, 200 community workers, and 35 teaching artists are receiving professional development training, which began in February 2005. Training is being provided to all daycare teachers and community workers from 35 selected pilot sites, as well as to teaching artists who are conducting residencies at 17 of those 35 sites. In addition to visiting professional artists, the 17 “implementing sites” receive a variety of resources to implement the program, including the SWTA teacher’s curriculum, “Start with the Arts at Home” for parents, art supplies and books and music related to the lesson plans.
