Construction Projects Manager

Lisa D'Andrea-Thompson joined the staff in 2004 as a Construction Projects Manager. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University and her Master’s Degree in Architecture from Syracuse University. Lisa is a native of Boston, Massachusetts. She lived in Florence, Italy for one year as part of her Master’s program. While in Florence, she learned to speak Italian and deepened her intense appreciation of painting, sculpture and the built form.

Her current responsibilities include construction project management for some of the Department’s $352 million worth of cultural projects that are part of the County’s General Obligation Bond (GOB) program. Lisa is working specifically with the Miami Science Museum on their new green building in downtown Miami which will sit adjacent to the brand new Miami Art Museum. The new Science Museum will be a 250,000 square foot exhibit of science and technology in action. The County is funding $165 million of the total $272 million construction cost for this project; this is the largest single allocation in the Counties GOB Program. The Science Museum broke ground in February of 2012 and is scheduled to open to the public in early 2015. Lisa is also working with several other GOB projects; including a complex of new buildings at the County’s beautiful Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens. In October of 2011 the new South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) opened in Cutler Bay. This new $54 million facility was designed by the world renown local Miami firm of Arquitectonica and it was the first project that Lisa managed while with the department. She continues to be involved with the Department run SMDCAC to assist with any capital needs that they have as they enter into their second year of productions this fall, 2012. This project was a huge success not only because of its culturally significant impact to the local community and the entire region that it serves but also because the construction management team was able to deliver it below the construction budget.

Prior to joining the Department Lisa spent a decade working in the private sector in and around Boston as a Project Architect in several architectural firms, and then as a Construction Project Manager for two developers. Her projects have included a state of the art multi-disciplinary theater, mixed-use hi-rise residential towers, mixed-use commercial and residential developments, a state of the art Data Center, and commercial and residential renovations. The construction budgets on these projects have ranged from $500,000 to $350 million.
