American Compatriots - New World Symphony

It’s another birthday celebration as Samuel Barber turns 100. Known for his prolific, heart-wrenching melodic gift (think Adagio for Strings), we honor Barber with his elegiac Canzonetta and his melancholic setting of Matthew Arnold’s bleak poem Dover Beach featuring bariton Randall Scarlata. Barber’s life partner Gian Carlo Menotti is more famous for his operas, but his chamber writing is just as dramatic, especially with his virtuosic Suite for Two Cellos and Piano.

Richard Strauss: The Music of Seduction - New World Symphony

Few composers personify love and sensuality as much as Richard Strauss. From his tone poems we hear the passion of heroes and the triumph of the common. Conductor James Gaffigan brings Don Juan, perhaps the greatest seducer of literary fame, to life in Strauss’ score of unbridled romantic gestures and spellbinding harmonies.

Mozart's Requium - Master Chorale of South Florida

Mozart's unfinished Requiem has long been shrouded in mystery. Mozart undertook the commission for an Austrian nobleman, little knowing that he was to write a requiem for himself. Inevitably, the secrecy surrounding the anonymous commission, the circumstances of Mozart's death, the unfinished state of the work, and its completion under the direction of Mozart's widow, Constanze, have precipitated two centuries of romantic speculation and scholarly controversy. – Christoph Wolff
