THE INAUGURAL MIAMI-DADE ARTS HALL OF FAME

SERVING THE ARTS AWARDS

MONDAY, APRIL 21, 2025

For those of us who love arts and culture, we are fortunate to be living in a community that is rich in artists, cultural institutions, and benefactors. We're still growing, and yet the time has come to look back and recognize all that we have achieved over the last few decades.

It is an exercise in awe to consider the many people who have played a role in making Miami-Dade County the vibrant arts region that it is today.

Truly great cultural communities usually take a massive amount of time and effort to achieve.

In our case, although most of our oldest arts organizations were founded less than one hundred years ago, Miami-Dade County is fortunate to have blossomed into a community with cultural institutions with rich histories that go back decades, like the Historic Lyric Theater (1913); Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (1938); HistoryMiami (1940) and the Florida Grand Opera (1941).

In recognition of all that has been achieved, today we honor some of the legendary individuals and trailblazers whose relentless commitment and dedication have shaped our community. Their contributions have been a catalyst in creating a Miami-Dade County where Theater, Literature, Dance, Music, History, Visual Art, Media Art, Poetry, Architecture, Folk Art, Science, and History thrive. The collective Herculean efforts of Miami's cultural, civic, elected, philanthropic, government and business leadership are a testament to the transformative power of the arts and serve to remind us that anything is possible when passionate individuals find their purpose.

It is fitting then that we shine a spotlight on those who have made transformative contributions to the advancement of the arts in Miami-Dade County, for they are the Arts Heros and Cultural Gladiators who have fought valiantly and tirelessly to build the foundation of the vibrant and diverse cultural life that we now enjoy. Of course, it would be impossible to recognize all those with significant contributions all at once, so new members of the Hall of Fame will be inducted next year and each year thereafter.

This inaugural Hall of Fame class honors and recognizes the individuals who contributed to creating and shaping our region's robust arts and cultural community. They had the imagination to envision what could be and the tenacity to make their vision into reality. We are the collective beneficiaries of their commitment and perseverance, and their legacy will continue to inspire us as we build an even brighter future for the arts in Miami-Dade County.

The Miami-Dade Arts Hall of Fame was unveiled at the Serving the Arts Awards.  The Serving the Arts Awards ceremony is produced by the Arts and Business Council of Miami in partnership with the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.
