POSITION TYPE: Part Time. Number of positions: Six (6)

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Afterschool Counselors are responsible for the safety, and well-being of the program participants, with an emphasis on the care for and supervision of participants in specific afterschool groups. Afterschool Counselors will ensure safety and good behavior through positive class management techniques, model desired behavior, and provide overall support to their assigned participants during the afterschool activities. The Afterschool Counselors report to the Afterschool Site Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create a warm and welcoming environment
  • Serve as a role model to the participants and actively participate
  • Assist with implementation of literacy curricula with a differentiated instruction approach
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports and daily attendance
  • Know, understand and implement all program procedures as appropriate
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for participants’ safety and knowing their whereabouts at all times; especially in emergency situations
  • Assist with snack distribution
  • Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences
  • Report concerns, comments and feedback to Site Manager
  • Assist participants during activities and provide support to instructors as needed
  • Facilitate and oversee free choice/free play (creative lab) activities
  • Ensure classroom management during program activities
  • Ensure that the site and designated locations are kept clean and organized
  • Two (2) counselors will be identified and trained to assist in the implementation of I-Ready and Reading Wonders literacy curriculum

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma
  • A clear Level II Background Screening
  • First Aid and CPR Certification (training available through A4L)
  • Experience working with children of varied ages
  • College course work in childcare, education, social work, psychology preferred
  • Experience with differentiated instruction and/or literacy curricula (preferred)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong organization and problem solving skills
  • Strong judgment and decision-making ability

EMPLOYMENT DATES & SCHEDULE

  • August 17, 2015 – June 3, 2016
  • Monday–Friday: 1:30 PM - 6:15 PM

COMPENSATION

  • Range $13.00- $15.00/hour
