Patricia Romeu serves as Program Chief of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs - Art in Public Places. In this capacity, Patricia manages the program’s strategic planning, its multi-million-dollar operating budget, and oversees the team of professionals implementing an annual program portfolio of over 100 public art projects, and the ongoing assessment and conservation needs of the Miami-Dade County Public Art Collection.
Since joining the department in 2006 as the program’s senior project manager, Patricia spearheaded the completion of over 125 diverse and complex artists commissions, many of which are fully integrated with the architecture of new County and municipal facilities including the Miami International Airport, PortMiami, Marlins Ballpark, the Miami Intermodal Center, and the City of Miami Beach Convention Center, among others. Through her in-depth project management and relationship building skills, Patricia developed a turnkey business model that has allowed the County’s public art program to thrive and to successfully engage with high caliber visual artists, many of whom have had little to no experience in creating artworks that meet the rigorous design, fabrication, and installation requirements for a work in a permanent public art collection.
Prior to joining Miami-Dade County, Patricia served as Project Manager for the Broward County Cultural Division Public Art & Design Program at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). During this tenure, she was instrumental in the completion of three (3) major integrated works of art with a combined value of over $4 million, completed on time and on budget for the first time in the program’s 25-year history for the opening of the airport’s new Rental Car Center. Preceding her involvement in the public sector, Patricia worked for 4 years as Operations Director of the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre managing the day-to-day business with a staff of over 20 full-time employees and the non-profit’s $3 million operating budget, while also managing the last two phases of a $7 million renovation project of the historical theatre facility.
While pursuing a Masters in Business Administration and a Bachelors in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Patricia also worked for (8) years as general manager of her family-owned photography and video production company, and (2) years as a systems quality control engineer for the American Express Latin America and Caribbean headquarter. Patricia’s Cuban roots are tied to one of the island’s most artistically renowned families, the Romeus, credited to date for popularizing one of Cuba’s music jewels the “Danzon.” Though she did not pursue formal training in the arts as most Romeu’s have, Patricia chose to apply her technical skills in project management, design, and construction to assist visual artists succeed in their own artistic endeavors. Patricia saves her downtime for spending quality time with family and friends and promoting recreational tennis among the South Florida women’s community as Chair of the Women’s Night Tennis League.
