Edward J. Allen and Mimi Schultz
Before relocating to Miami, duo Mimi Schultz and Edward J. Allen traveled across the country by van, performing street theater, working with Ringling Brothers Clown College, and performing internationally. In 1978, in New York City, they founded the award-winning Fantasy Theatre Factory. Under their leadership, Fantasy Theatre Factory has served children and families for decades, with a strong focus on reaching under-resourced communities, including children with disabilities. In 2019, Mimi and Ed were honored with the Pioneer Award by the South Florida Theatre League at its annual Remy Awards. This award recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to the health, growth, and development of the South Florida theatre community. Both founders now serve as consultants for the organization. Mimi served as Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Fantasy Theatre Factory from 1978 to 2013 and continues her involvement as a Board Member and Advisor. Her many accolades include the 2013 The Children’s Trust Award for Excellence in Direct Service to Children, finalist for the 2004 Excellence in Arts Management Award and Miami-Dade County’s Arts Educator of the Year (1999, 2001.) A founding member of the Children’s Cultural Coalition, she has served as a panelist for the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Schools Visual and Performing Arts Committee, and Florida Division of Arts and Culture. Ed served as Co-Founder and Executive Director of Fantasy Theatre Factory from 1978 to 2014. In addition to his leadership role, he was a principal performer - appearing as an actor, magician, and juggler - and produced a wide array of public events for the company, including entertainment for Art Deco Weekend Festival Miami Beach (1985-2018) and Miami-Dade County Youth Fair. He served as a liaison for Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs’ Cultural Advancement Grant Program and participated on numerous state and county grant panels. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to the arts, December 20th has been officially proclaimed Edward J. Allen Day in both Miami-Dade County and the City of South Miami. Together, Mimi Schultz and Edward J. Allen have left an indelible mark on Miami’s cultural landscape, inspiring generations through their tireless dedication to arts accessibility, education, and community engagement.
