
Shirley Richardson
Longtime cultural leader, Shirley Richardson has served as the Executive Director of Florida’s oldest Black theater company, The M Ensemble, since 1990, where she has been a driving force behind its success and growth. She studied Theater at Florida A&M University, earning her B.F.A. in Theater from the University of Miami in 1971, and holds a Master of Science from Nova Southeastern University. As Executive Director, Shirley oversees all operations, including grantswriting, strategic planning and program development, ensuring the company’s continued impact in the community. Shirley is also a dedicated leader within the Diaspora Arts Coalition, where she serves as President. Throughout her career, Shirley has directed and performed in numerous productions, nurturing the arts in Miami. In addition to her work in the arts, she retired after 35 years of service with Miami-Dade County as a Substance Abuse Counselor. Her leadership has earned her numerous accolades and recognition for her outstanding contributions to the arts and cultural landscape, including a Knight Foundation Challenge Award. A respected and dynamic leader, Shirley continues to inspire and mentor others through her work in the arts and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on Miami-Dade’s cultural community.
