Join the Museum of Art and Design for a night at the movies when we screen The Last Days of the Miami News. This documentary was shot during the last days of operation for the local newspaper the Miami News. Provided with unlimited access to all areas involved in the publication of the Miami News, film director Mel Kiser captures the final events, thoughts and activities of the staff as they prepare the final issue of the Miami News. Katharine Labuda, Special Collections & Archives Librarian of Miami Dade-Public Library System, will introduce the film.

MOAD Talks – A Conversation with Khadijah Cypress

Join the Museum of Art and Design's Consulting Curator, Isabela Villaneuva in conversation with Khadijah Cypress for MOAD Talks. Khadijah Cypress is a tribal member from The Miccosukee Tribe. She is Bird Clan and the mother of two boys. Since picking up a pair of scissors and sitting at an industrial sewing machine, she has accomplished several things including sewing for the tribe’s fashion show and hosted the tribe’s fashion show twice. Her work was presented in an exhibition at the Pérez Art Museum from 2021 to 2022.
This conversation with Khadijah Cypress is presented in conjunction with the Museum of Art and Design’s exhibition Abstraction as Legacy. This exhibition features a work by painter Lloyd Kiva New who was also a fashion designer and was a co-founder of Institute of American Indian Arts.
Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free and open to the public. Event attendees may park for free in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets.

MOAD Talks – A Conversation with Khadijah Cypress
Únase a la Curadora Consultora del Museo de Arte y Diseño, Isabela Villaneuva, en una conversación con Khadijah Cypress para MOAD Talks. Khadijah Cypress es miembro tribal de la Tribu Miccosukee. Es del Clan del Ave y madre de dos niños. Juana Inés is an original interdisciplinary work by The Opera Atelier fusing opera, contemporary dance, and performance art, based on the life and times of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. A towering intellectual of XVII Century Mexico, the self-educated Sor Juana is among the greatest writers in the Spanish language.
On the same program, following the intermission, see La Zarazuela perform, La Revoltosa; a modern staging where tradition and modernity collide in an explosive story of love and rivalry. Limited number of Golden Tickets available.

Land, Text, Light: Out of the Vault continues a series of exhibitions for Miami Dade College’s campus galleries that highlight works from the Museum of Art and Design’s collection. Some of these works are rarely seen, while others have been featured in recent exhibitions. The works by painter Lynne Golob Gelfman and multimedia artist Xaviera Simmons are recent donations to the collection, and Out of the Vault marks the first time the college presents these works in their galleries.
The five artists featured in this exhibition are Lynne Golob Gelfman, Pat Lipsky, Emilio Sanchez, Xaviera Simmons, and Purvis Young. Each of these American artists produced distinctive bodies of work that allow for rumination on the human condition. Whether it be work that represents land or evokes land, compositions that literally present text or conjure unique storytelling, or art that considers visual perception and how light and color coalesce, this exhibition invites unexpected dialogue about American art.

Tierra, Texto, Luz: Fuera de la Bóveda continúa una serie de exposiciones para las galerías del campus de Miami Dade College que destacan obras de la colección del Museo de Arte y Diseño. Algunas de estas obras rara vez se ven, mientras que otras han sido presentadas en exposiciones recientes.
